The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

    A Good September

    posted Sat, 09/30/06

    Why that title?

SC is THRIVING in her new school. She is doing well in math (yay!), likes all her classes and has made a new friend or two. And her ex-best friend is being nice to her--probably because suddenly she too is a little fish in a big pond!

We've told SC it's fine to be friends with "AW" but not to trust her. She's that sort of kid. And I think SC knows that now.....

She's in ballet twice a week--and a fellow student she really liked has returned after leaving last spring to do lacrosse (!) And a neighborhood girl SC has always liked has joined the class, and we're hoping they'll become better friends this year.

JR seems to be doing okay with second grade--and has become firm friends with a little girl we know and like. And the kids who has been  her evil nemesis since preschool is in the other second grade class!

The Man and I figured out a way to store the towels displaced when we gave up our linen closet for a washer/dryer. I'll take a picture when it's done--it's really neat!

My programs are doing well and I think I'm going to actually have enough kids to do a really good afternoon program for the 3 to 5 year old set. It's my favorite program--I can't wait until Halloween!

We made a record amount of money on the booksale and people appreciated the way I sorted non-fiction into categories for the sale. And my boss liked what I had done--we've got plans to make sorting even easier for the next booksale.

A friend got a well deserved promotion at work and we are all very proud of him.
(And if you're still reading this, you know who you are!)

I'm going to 2 dance classes a week, and though I don't LOVE my second class the way I do Lynne's, it's okay. And I'm walking too. The girls have an extra early schoolday this year because of a construction project. It's a pain getting them up and out so early, but it means I get to work very early, and can take a morning walk.

The result of the exercise is that I'm finally starting to lose a little weight. Better still, my muscles are starting to reshape. Three nannies noticed I look thinner--and so did Lynne. Now if my MOTHER just will at Thanksgiving (!)

And the other result of the exercise is that my doctor is happy with my blood pressure, thinks I'm doing great in general and doesn't want to see me again until March!

So it's been a good month. Oh, there have been ups and downs, but as the song says "the downs have been few".

    On to October!
