After a nervous time of it on Monday, I didn't worry when SC didn't call me until 4PM on Wednesday to report she was home safely from school.
But then it turned out, she had decided to quit her Wednesday afternoon drama club and was home by 3PM. Why didn't she call me?
"I forgot"
But once she'd called me, she decided she needed to call some other folks. Which is why I got a call from my mother around 5 reporting she'd had a 1 hour conversation with SC, and assuming that SC was "lonely" on her first real day as a latch key kid.
When I called SC, she denied this, saying she just hadn't talked to Grandma for a while and thought it was a good time. She wasn't aware it was a long distance call to Grandma (Virginia to NYC) and that it might get expensive.
She is now!
As for my mom, if she tries to meddle in this again (and she supported me in trying to let SC stay home alone) I am going to do something I usually avoid doing--remind her that SC has TWO sets of grandparents and loves them both.
Because SC's confession after the phone discussion was "I called Nanay and Tatay (my in-laws), too"
You know, I think Alexander Graham Bell's got a lot to answer for.
Along with whichever bright boy invented the automatic phone dialer.............
