The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 16 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 15(how did that happen?) Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

Best Friends

posted Mon, 08/01/05

I just love this recent picture of JR and her best friend!

They grew up together from infancy in home daycare. Poor underprivileged kids, their mommies had to work and all they got to do was play together all day! Yeah, their growth and social skills were REALLY hurt by the fact that they had working mothers--can't you just see it in their faces?

Sorry for the sarcasm, but a lot of women HAVE to work for a living, and  I firmly believe that if you have good quality daycare, children will thrive.  The problem is there is so little funding and regulation for daycare and there IS a lot of bad daycare out there. On the other hand, there's a lot of bad parenting too.....

By the way, their daycare provider was Afghani and Muslim and for those of you ignorant enough to stereotype Muslims on the basis of what  terrorists do in the name of their religion, I wish you could meet Saida and her family. Some of the most loving people it has ever been my luck to know!

Though the girls  go to different schools now, they are still close as sisters. In fact, the Man sometimes tells people that they are HALF-sisters, which gets him some very strange looks.....................
