The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

I Think I Have It!

posted Mon, 03/24/08

If you have read my moanings and groanings about ballet class, you know that I am attempting to master something called an arabesque turn.

I've been trying to find a video to illustrate one, but I can't. So all I can do is describe it as going up on one foot to spin while extending the other leg out straight. And I haven't been able to get my leg to swing out the way it should.

Sunday I was practicing with SC and JR--they've got dance routines for the recital coming up in June. And suddenly, SC yelled "Mom, you did it!"

And apparently, somehow I had done the turn! It wasn't a very good one, but I did several more.

Not only that, but SC told me that she can't do "that other turn--the one with your leg up--and you CAN!"

She meant a  basic single pirouette--get up on one leg with the other knee bent and turn. REAL ballerinas can do pirouette after pirouette--I can only do just one at a time.
But I CAN do it. And it's kind of cool to be able to something that SC can't do yet!

One of the tall types was in class today. So was another "ringer"-- a skinny blond with a smirk.
I ignored them both. I managed the arabesque turns and I kept up with everything else.

Afterwards, Lynne told me. "You really did well today--you felt good about yourself"

And I did. And I do.
THAT'S why I dance..........
