The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

"Jamais Deux Sans Trois"? Well, In My Case It Was "Jamais UN Sans Troix"

    posted Fri, 01/19/07

The above saying translates as to "Never 2 without 3". As in if something happens twice, it'll happen a third time.

This morning, a small glass storage bowl popped out of the fridge and smashed on the kitchen floor.

Tonight, I was carrying a paper shopping bag with 2 bottles of olive oil in it up the steps leading to our townhouse. The bag tore open, the bottles fell on the steps and smashed.

There was olive oil all over the steps. And they're not just our steps--all our neighbors use them too.

The Man is my hero. He helped me sweep up the glass, lugged out pails of hot water and dish liquid, and we scrubbed and washed down the stairs. Then we sprinkled them with some of the sand the condo association keeps at the sidewalk for snow/ice, none of which we've used this year!

All of the above was done in the dark by the way, just with a flashlight. And it was COLD!!!!

As I said, the Man is my hero.

And the next time I buy olive oil in Trader Joe's, they'd durn well better double bag it for me!!

Oh, and it may not be as environmentally friendly as whatever TJ's sells to the yuppies, but let me tell you, those ads about Dawn liquid are right.

It really does get grease (or olive oil) out of your way...........
