The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 16 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 15(how did that happen?) Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

More On Homework

posted Sat, 10/03/09

Landismom (she of Bumblebee and Sweet Potato) commented on my last post in terms of homework and the managing thereof.

I am a hands-off parent in general when it comes to the girls homework. Their responsibility to do it--though I will see what they have and remind them to do it. Or rather, I still do that for JR. At 14 SC is more than old enough to manage her work--and I'm glad to say that she seems to do so nicely.

I'll help with homework if needed, but my theory is that I already went to school, already got graded and it's not me who's going to have to get into college in <sigh> all too few years. So mostly, the girls do their own.

But this cartoon from the wonderful Pajama Diaries made me chortle. Because I know an awful lot of parents like this. Including the Man a time or two!

P.S.  I highly recommend that you consider a subscription to King Features "Daily Ink" website ,and get Terri's daily cartoons. It's $15.00 per year and entitles you to get nearly 100 comics, plus games and other such. Lots of other good strips there that you can't get in the newspaper. I'm personally partial to old strips from "The Phantom" myself...
