The Truth Laid Bear, home of the infamous "blog ecology" has requested citizens of the blogosphere to blog about where they stand on the Harriet Miers nomination.
Now I am a mere "flippery fish" in the blog ecology, which means my opinion doesn't have much bearing on the national viewpoint. And for the most part, I've preferred to take what several bloggers have referred to as "the popcorn strategy"--to sit back in comfort and watch while the conservatives fight it out among themselves.
But since TLB asked, I'll stand up and make my voice known.
I oppose the Miers nomination.
I don't think Georgie Boy could've done any better in picking a nominee I can hate in so many ways.
We won't even get into her religious beliefs or her views on Roe v Wade, save to say I have stated elsewhere that as far as I'm concerned, it's fine to have personal beliefs, but when you walk into the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court you are representing ALL Americans, and your own personal views need to be left in the cloakroom.
I could despise her views--and I suspect that I do. But it's the sheer INSULT of nominating someone who is so obviously unfit and unprepared to get a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land that makes me stick extra pins in my Georgie Boy voodoo doll.
There is cronyism. And then there is CRONYISM.
Can you really, I mean REALLY look me in the eye and tell me in a country that is CRAWLING with lawyers (hell, in my DC suburb you'd better drive carefully, because every other car out there is being driven by a lawyer or a lawyer's spouse!) little Georgie's search lead him to conclude that the most qualified, most competent, most BRILLIANT lawyer in the country happened to be his very own personal counsel?
Of course, since she considers him to be the "most brilliant man she ever met" obviously you can see the attraction of putting her on the court. I mean if she recognized what the rest of us have not--that George Bush is an intellectual genius obviously she must have powers of intellect most of the rest of us lack. And thank heavens for it..........
Nominating Miers for the Court in insulting to us all. We need scholarly, intelligent people on the court. People who have spent years studying and thinking about the Constitution. People who understand how the law works in our everyday lives.
What we don't need is people whose main recommendation is that the POTUS "knows what's in her heart".
Especially when the only thing we've been allowed to see of what's in her heart is something that resembles a teenager's crush on a rock star. It strikes me Miers would've been a lot better off releasing her working papers and keeping her cards to Georgie and Laura private...
Harriet Miers needs to withdraw before the hearings. According to today's New York Times she is not impressing the Senators just in the private meetings. Following John Robert's admittedly impressive performance would be daunting even if she WERE a brilliant scholar and a polished speaker. And from what we've seen, she isn't!
And after she withdraws George Bush needs to find someone else to search for a new candidate for the Court. A candidate who all of us can be proud of to see as a member of the highest court in the land!
But he'd better find someone to lead the search that he doesn't know well and won't be tempted to choose as the new nominee. We've seen what winners that tends to produce.....
Back to munching my popcorn and watching the fun!
