The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

Want The Latest Mishegosse?

Part Time Job, Full Time Pay

posted Mon, 03/20/06

Sound too good to be true?

Well, this sweetheart deal can be yours too, IF you get elected to the US Congress.

No kidding. Our elected representatives are getting paid $165,000 per year, PLUS health insurance, plus all the little perks of being a Congressperson, and in exchange they are working an average 2 1/2 day week.

And please don't start with "well, they have to go back to their home districts to work there".

Baloney!

What they are going back to their districts to do is to campaign so that they can get re-elected and keep their cushy jobs for another term.

They are also taking large chunks of vacation. This week, they are, believe it or not, on a "St Patrick's" recess, not for a day, but for a week!!!

There are articles about this in several papers including here  in the Chicago Tribune.

It strikes me that if we started paying our officials by the ACTUAL hours that they worked rather than at a flat rate, we could save a lot of money that we could put back into Social Security, or Medicare, or social programs that these same officials keep cutting.

Better still, we could give the money back as tax refunds to all the poor souls out there slaving to raise their families on what these morons think is a fair minimum wage!

BTW, is anyone but me is noting that this is a REPUBLICAN Congress with the shining example of a REPUBLICAN president who has taken his vacation days that would get any civilian fired for chronic absenteeism?

Now returning you back to your workaday world.

Unless you're a Congressperson of course, which means you're on vacation.................
