The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

Want The Latest Mishegosse?

And While We Are On Kids Books....

posted Mon, 07/18/05

Since I'm ranting about such things this week, I for one am NOT waiting with baited breath for "The Empire Strikes Back"--excuse me--"Eldest" by Christopher Paolini to make its fall debut.

I still cannot get over how so many intelligent, well read adults can be taken in by a re-do of Star Wars with some dragons and Tolkienish names thrown in.

Whatever happened to reading books CRITICALLY?

I guess when you've got a book written by a weirdly homeschooled teenager and published by his parents, you've got a great built in publicity campaign. So none of those other little things count.

Like writing skills that reach above those in a Bulwer-Lytton ("It was a dark and stormy night") Fiction Contest entry.  Plot skills that go beyond lifting various bits from movies and books and slapping them together.

Oh, and characters that are YOUR own, instead of being ripped off from said movies and books. Characters that go beyond cardboard stock figures.

But I guess when you can market a book like this and make millions and garner lots of articles about your young author, why bother with things like that?

What DO I think your kids could be reading in the fantasy line? So glad you asked. I'll have some of my favorites--old and new--in my next post.
