The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

More From Our Road Trip

posted Thu, 11/17/05

We spent Friday morning at Williamsburg, then headed first south east, towards Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and then crossed the Chesapeake Bay on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, a 23 mile long span interrupted by two tunnels.

JR is looking at the water from the Seagull Rest Stop. The rocks below mark the tunnel portion of the bridge and way in the distance you can see where the tunnel ends and the bridge resumes!

People are forever saying SC looks like me, but her hair fools them. Watching these march along together, two "sturdy" figures in red shirts and caps, you know she is definitely very much Daddy's girl!

JR wants her fair share of the attention too. And she has a weapon SC never will--she is a FLIRT!!

We arrived Friday night on Chincoteague and had a wonderful seafood dinner, followed by ice cream, of course!

Saturday morning we took a walk along the causeway that leads to Assateague, then drove onto the island all the way to the beach:

Not bathing suit weather, but as you can see, it cuts down on the crowds! And the sky really was as BLUE as it looks here, and the winds were minimal. Great beach walking weather.

We had a quick lunch and couldn't resist stopping for ice cream at the Island Creamery again!

JR eating (and wearing) black raspberry ice cream.

SC with a "Marsh Mud" (CHOCOLATE!!!) moustache.

Then it was home again, home again, jiggety jig. Which--since I was driving--only took about 3 hours.

If the Man had been driving it would have been about 4 or 5. But that's another story!

It really was a wonderful trip, and the girls behaved pretty nicely. Just hope they'll do the same next week, when it's time for (help!) our Thanksgiving road trip to New York City!
