The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

Memorial Day

posted Tue, 06/07/05

On Memorial Day JR and I went to Brookside Gardens in Wheaton,MD. It's a beautiful place that reminds me a lot of my beloved NY Botanical Gardens.

We go each year because of a wonderful exhibit called "Wings of Discovery". Live butterflies are housed inside a large greenhouse and you can walk amidst them, marveling at their beauty. This time one even landed on my hand--making JR VERY jealous!

We go each year--it's a special treat for both of us. Afterwards we explore the gardens. JR LOVES flowers and she loves to pose for pictures in front of the flowers--the little ham.

This year, we happened to come upon a spot we had never seen before:

Most people in the US heard about the DC snipers' reign of terror in the fall of 2002. JR is too young to remember it, but I do.......

This memorial was built in honor of the sniper victims and has their names carved into a stone not seen here. But I found the words on the stone especially appropriate on Memorial Day.......

I hope that's a thought we can all agree on. If not for our sake, for the sake of JR and all the children of the world, who should be growing up free and unafraid.......
