Pupik (puh-pick) is the delightful Yiddish word for your bellybutton--okay, your navel if you want to be prim about it.
My wonderful sister-in-law was playing with SC as a toddler, and when she pointed to her bellybutton and wanted to know what it was, SC called it her pupik. Auntie R speaks English or Tagalog, but not Yiddish, so there was a bit of confusion until I explained it to her.....
I bring the word up today, because years ago for some unknown reason my mother went into gusts of giggles when I told her our garden was doing so well that we were going to be "up to our pupiks in tomatoes". I mean, it wasn't THAT funny, but somehow it tickled her, and she totally lost it.
And this year, after many years of frustration and $85 worth of organic ammendments to my soil, I am once more:
UP TO MY PUPIK IN TOMATOES!

This is what I harvested Saturday from my garden.
The little egg shaped ones are called "Juliet" and even SC will eat those as they are less juicy--she likes the MEATY kind of tomatoes. They are EXTREMELY prolific--one plant produces dozens after dozens.
There are also "Celebrity", "Big Girl" and delectable bigger egg shaped tomatoes called "Dona" and "Enchantment". Yum!!!!

These beauties are "Sungold" cherry tomatoes, the sort that right now run about $2.75 per HALF PINT in my local farmer's market. They are well worth it--they are THAT delicious, but luckily I have a plant of my own. Last week, I picked a pints worth twice. This week, I picked about a QUART on Saturday!
So now it will be tomato, pesto and mozzarella sandwiches, zucchini/tomato pie, chopped tomatoes with pasta, garlic, basil and olive oil, and all the other wonderful fresh tomato dishes I can eat!
Here's to hoping all you tomato loving gardeners will be up to YOUR pupiks in tomatoes, and, until next time:
ABEI GEZUNT!
