The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

A Year On Blog Explosion

posted Fri, 12/09/05

This week is another sort of "blogaversary"--it's the one year anniversary of my joining Blog Explosion.

In the year I have been using Blog Explosion, I have had over 60,000 hits. In fact, I just went over 70,000 this week.

Contrast that to the first 14 months of the blog before BE. I had 6000 hits, which is now a MONTHLY average for this blog.

I am not that hipped on hits for the sake of hits. But what I delight in is the fact that BE has allowed me to write for others and in return, to enjoy their blogs as well.

Thanks to BE I met Pia, the author of Courting Destiny, who is always worth reading, no matter whether she is recalling her wilder younger days, ranting about politics or giving a picture of one woman's life in post 9/11 New York.....

And Deborah, the "Vetmommy" with her tales of life with small children, animal patients, and human patience....

Then there's Jenn of Heisse Scheisse struggling with German classes, crazy cats and the life of an American abroad, and her husband Markus a.k.a. "Sparky" who  frequently plays devil's advocate with his comments here.

He has also, BTW, forever changed the way I look at a Post-It, but you'll have to go to Jenn's blog for THAT!

Tired Tunia shares my life as both a librarian and a mom and the struggle to balance the two, and the Tiny Little Librarian may not have our crazy dual existence, but she too deals with the crazy parents, the unreasonable (and sometimes unbalanced) adults, and all the other fun parts of serving the public on a daily basis.

And  when I mention librarians of course there's Guusje, who writes eloquently  "Of Life, Ebay and Books" and is one of the only people in the blogosphere to know my TRUE identity.  But then that's fair, because I'm one of the only people outside of the Netherlands and its former colonies who knows how to  REALLY pronounce her name.....

There's the politicos I love, like the crew at Bring It On! and the Martian Anthropologist who try to hold intelligent debates and treat all opinions with respect. And the ones I detest, the ones I won't mention by name here, because I either block their sites or play solitaire while surfing past their hate filled, bigoted, vile spewing contents.

People like Cheryl, the "Mad Baggage" and Jane of Jane Loves Tarzan, who write moving pieces about their lives one day, and the next write entries that make me ROTFL.

A Mama Rants and Karen of Verbatim both prove it IS possible to write a "mommy blog" that is intelligent, thoughtful , entertaining AND non-saccharine,and that it is possible for SAHMS and working moms to communicate, enjoy each other's points of view AND share their favorite recipes.....

And  of course Landismom's Bumblebee and Sweetpotato is SO well written that she has gone beyond the blogosphere with her pieces!

In between  the right wing nutjobs, the twitty teens who can't write and  can't spell (and can't go one sentence without a 4 letter word),the fatuous (and clubby) mommy bloggers, the religious bigots, the deadly serious (and boring) political essayists, and all the rest of the crazies of the blogosphere, I have found some wonderful people thanks to Blog Expolosion.

Thank you for writing your blogs and putting them out there for the rest of us to read them. Thank you for reading my blog and contributing your comments.

Blog On!
