The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

So Far So Good At Work, But Dance Class Awaits...

posted Thu, 09/16/04

The two year old programs went okay. They were small, but it's the beginning of the schedule, and I changed the day, so it's to be expected.

The one year old programs were a good size, despite the parents who kvetched about the new day. There are ALWAYS lots of kids around for the one year old program. Now if they would just take books out.......

My afternoon program for the 3-5s was a BLAST!

It's like having a class. I've known most of these children since they were babies and most of their families really DO use the library for books. In fact, I started the afternoon program back up because these families visited for books regularly even when their kids couldn't come to the scheduled programs!!

I have about 18-22 kids at the programs. They're enthusiastic, they participate, I know their names--they're FUN!

Meanwhile I am nervously anticipating ballet class, week 2. Since going I have found out a few things:

1)The teacher is not really a ballet person--her specialties are jazz and modern. From what I can tell, dance is a sideline for her and I don't think she had any training as a teacher.

2) I found a wonderful site called Blue Diamond Dance  which is aimed at adults learning dance, including ballet, and found there were a lot of other people out there doing the same thing. The site has a list of recommended adult ballet teachers, including several at the school I am going to. Needless to say, the teacher of my class is not listed!

3)I hauled out my Ballet Workout video--which I was able to do quite well-- and saw how similar the teacher style on that is to the class I took with my friend.  Simple steps, simple positions and no complicated combinations--just what beginners need!

So I am going to class tonight. I am going to wear my black leggings and "I Am Mother--Watch Me Do 10,000 Jobs At Once" t shirt and try to make my hair tidy. I will stretch well before class. I will modify any steps I need to to avoid hurting myself--if I have to work at 1/2 time, while everyone is doing 1/4 time, so be it.

And next semester I will take class with one of the REAL ballerinas!
