I love Charlotte's Web , but kids should also meet Louis the mute swan who gains a voice and a love. And if you liked Make Way For Ducklings (another favorite of mine) you'll recognize one of the settings......
The Wind in the Willows

Not a young child's book at all,but a beautifully written book about friendship, greed, self centeredness and love.
The best illustrations are by Ernest Shepherd. He was also the first (and only REAL!) illustrator of Winnie the Pooh!

Saturday at the Ref Desk--Or Should I Say the Tech Support Desk?
In a hour at the desk I:
Helped a lady from out of town get a visitor's pass to use the computer.
Explained to one of our most paranoid local ladies(according to her both the FBI and CIA monitor her) that we did not have the little pad with her library card number she was using while on the computer, and had to get the security guard to assure her that the woman on the next computer hadn't stolen it.
Showed a guy how to get a printer card so he could print his work from the computer.
Asked a girl to turn the sound down on her computer, because the music from the video she was watching could be heard at my desk-- which is a good 10-20 feet away from the computers. And showed her how to do so because she didn't know how to do so.
Helped a guy get back on the Internet--he thought it had crashed, but it was just a problem with the page he was looking at on MySpace.
And (last but not least!)consulted with the security guard on chasing out a guy we think was getting another guy to do something illegal for him on the computer. (And he disappeared immediately after she warned him off, so I think we were right in our suspicions)
Several of our staffers are taking their final exams today before getting their Masters Degrees in "Library and Information Science"--yes, you have to go to grad school to be a librarian--really!
But on days like today I wonder if perhaps we instead should all get our training at Microsoft..............
