The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

Saturday Morning At the Consignment Sale (No, It's Not Another Tale From Stepford)

    posted Sat, 10/01/05

As I said the other day, parents are the most important people in their kids lives. I'm just the librarian who does the story hour and recommends books.

Still, it's always nice to be recognized for what you do. Everyone needs that sort of thing now and then.

I was at a children's clothing sale this morning when a woman stopped her minivan, greeted me warmly and gave me a big hug!

She remembered me from years ago when her daughter had come to my storytime. She's a daycare provider as well, and said she remembered how much fun my programs were.

She said some other nice things about me as well, in terms of she's never seen anyone else do programs like mine.  At least <grin> I ASSUME it was a compliment!

We chatted for a few minutes. She's had an interesting life. She's from Colombia, one of 19 (yes, NINETEEN) children and she came here pursuing the American dream.

She worked her way through college, has a psychology degree and owns a daycare center of her own now. Her daughter, at age 13 is going to the most prestigious public high school in the area and is an A+ student.  There's a second daughter as well, who is involved in as many extra-curricular activities as any of little well-heeled native born kids I know.

I read someone's blog yesterday where he besmirched immigrants--saying they don't understand the US and the American dream as well as his small town compatriots do. It really ticked me, considering my own in-laws are immigrants and that I am just second generation American born myself.  Having that awareness of what our families went through so recently tends to make us a lot more appreciative of what it means to be an American than some of the folks who have been here for hundreds of years!

So it was wonderful seeing this patron. It always makes me feel good to know people remember my library and my programs and felt that I did something good for them.

But it was even better to see proof of something that I firmly believe. The American dream is alive and well.

Even if it does speak with an accent..............................
