The Cast Of Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 13 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 13. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story(!)

JR: Age 9  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

Want The Latest Mishegosse?

Seeing Double--Literally

posted Wed, 11/16/05

I have 8--count them--EIGHT(!) pairs of twins at my current programs!!

At one program alone I have 3 sets.

There are a pair of sisters who are so fraternal that I didn't even think they were the same AGE, let alone twins! And a pair of brothers where one is blond and one red haired--so I always know who is who.

Two more are brother and sister sets--no problem there.

But the other 4 sets--two male, two female--are SO alike that I am desperate to tell them apart.

One mom has blue tape on one of her boy's shoes, and she doesn't dress them alike. Neither does the other boys' mom, but she has to TELL me every week who is who.

One set of the girls wear different hair bows, and the others USUALLY wear different colored tops. But again, I have to ask for their grownups help in telling them apart.

Last year I had a pair of redheaded rascals (about 18 months old) who came with mom and a helper, and liked to change places during the programs. I SWEAR they knew what they were doing and did it on purpose!

On the bright side, the week their grandma came instead of their mom, SHE was having trouble telling them apart as much as I was. That was comforting!

I have always had twins at programs--in fact, one year we even had triplet boys. But having 8 sets is definitely an all time record around here.

I know all the reasons--genetics, lots of older moms, fertility drugs,IVF babies, etc. But I can't help wondering if there's something in the water..................................
