Dear Senator Obama,
I'm sorry, but you're totally nuts asking us to help the Clintons pay off their campaign debt.
Hillary (and Bill) Clinton created these debts. They have the personal responsibility to pay them back. Isn't personal responsibility something you have stressed when talking about social issues in the community?
I find it laughable that you think we should be helping a couple who last year had an income nearly equivalent in dollars to the entire US population, a yearly income that is more than most of us will see in a lifetime of working, when there are millions of people in this country struggling daily to put food on the table, gas in the car and clothing on their children's backs!
A lot of people in this country are in big trouble now because they went hog wild with their equity and their credit cards and now things have changed. The Clintons did the same thing, just on a far grander scale. They mismanaged their campaign spending in a way that makes you wonder what they would've done if they had gotten back to the White House.
Let them do what the rest of us do when they have to pay off the debt. They can sell the house in NY and move into an apartment--perhaps Charles Rangel can sublet them one of those rent controlled places he owns right near Bill's Harlem office. They can sell off a car or two and ride the subways.
And they can take on extra work. Write a few books and send Bill on another lecture tour and they can clean up those debts in no time!
Or, if worse comes to worst, perhaps they can borrow funds from Chelsea. After all, she works for a hedge fund that deals in failed mortgages--that's big money these days.
One way or another, let's make them accountable. It would be a nice change for them after the past few years.
Let all those pouting Hillary supporters who swear they're going to vote for McCain clean up their idol's debts.
And if you're feeling guilty, DON'T!
Because if it had been the other way round, Hillary would have thrown you to the wolves.....
Sincerely one of your supporters, complete with one of your stickers on my bumper,
The Library Lady
