The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Still At the Beach

    posted Thu, 08/31/06

The weather isn't great, but it hasn't been that bad yet.  Yesterday it was cloudy but dry and we were able to walk on the beach, but it wasn't nice enough to go in the water. Today the "no swimming" flags are posted, but I doubt if anyone would be crazy enough to even try surfing--the waves are HUGE.  We did go out on the beach a bit, but we were all wearing long pants and sweatshirts. The winds whipped our hair in all directions, but luckily, they were not blowing in a way to make the sand pelt us--that is PAINFUL!

Not far from the beach there are wetlands where there are lots of wading birds and today we saw DOZENS of egrets and herons. They sit up in the trees looking like Christmas ornaments, and SC said they looked as if they were having a convention! When many of them flew off, she and JR decided they were going on lunch break and started inventing the menu for the "Blue Heron Cafe"--worm spaghetti, fish balls and bug juice!

We went out to eat at one of our favorite seafood restaurants last night, and  may venture a short way off Chincoteague to another favorite eating place tonight. We'll see--the weather is supposed to get worse tomorrow, so if we are going to go anywhere, tonight's the night.

So we're managing to do stuff--though it's not as much fun as playing on the beach.

And betcha the bad weather will clear out on Saturday as we head home................
