The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

    This Is Ridiculous!

    posted Thu, 06/09/05

The Discovery Channel is having a "Greatest American" program where people can vote for the most important people in American History.

Now maybe I am expecting more from my fellow Americans than I should. But it seems to me that the voting has all the finesse of that for "American Idol". I can handle the fact that people vote for singers on that show based on their looks, or their personality, or anything else but their singing talent. After all, this is the country that now considers people like Britney Spears and the Simpson sisters to be talented singers instead of well packaged teen trash.

But we are talking abour our proud American heritage here. The one people wave flags about and expect the world to be in awe of.

So who have your fellow citizens voted in as the 100 greatest Americans of ALL TIME?

People like  Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore, George Bush, Bill Clinton and Madonna.  And of course, cult heroes like Elvis and Ronald Reagan.

Michael Jackson doesn't seem to have made it, but I'm sure he got his fair share of the votes too.

This is not supposed to be about politics, but I suspect a lot of people are playing a partisan game. I also think there are too damned many people who have forgotten that American history didn't start with "People" magazine. Our history stretches back over almost 400 years, and a lot of people have made contributions that will have value long after our current pop culture gods have disappeared and been forgotten.

I urge you to go to http://tv.channel.aol.com/greatestamerican and vote for those finalists who TRULY made major contributions to our country.    And please think in terms of HISTORY, not pop culture or partisan politics. ......
