The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

Trying to Be Positive On A Monday

    posted Mon, 07/11/05

Good thoughts to start my week:

The horrible (itchy beyond belief) hives that I have NOT blogged about but have suffered with for the last 2 weeks are going, going, and soon to be gone. And it only took two visits to the doctor and three useless topical creams before I got the oral steroids that stopped the itching within hours....

Have you ever seen For Better or For Worse cartoonist Lynne Johnston's book David, We're Pregnant? There's a cartoon in it with a  very pregnant women in a hospital bed being examined by a whole team of (male doctors) and thinking "And to think I used to be embarassed to be seen in my underwear?"

Well, I did something similar at the doctors. When my GP and the allergist needed me to show them how far the hives/rash extended, they offered to get me a gown. I just said, "It's okay, I've had 2 kids" and dropped my pants to show them!!!!

I neglected my community garden because of vacation and hives, but it didn't get mad at me. Indeed, the $80 or so I put into all those organic additives this spring seems to have restored my worn out soil, and I am going to have to get out there frequently if I don't want the zucchinis to become the size of baseballs. And we are going to have TONS of tomatoes--YUM!

SC is enjoying the summer program she is going to via the schools. Right now she is taking "Cooking With Science", and next week will start a two week session on "Flight and Space Travel". The school bus drops her at the library in the afternoon and she is happy to hang out here reading or using the computers until it's time to go home.

As an added bonus, because I have to get SC or be at work to meet her bus I get to get out of my boring monthly book meeting EARLY tomorrow. Heh, heh, heh....

JR is having a wonderful time back at her old preschool's summer camp. Her best friend/almost twin sister since they were babies in day care is there too, as well as some of her other old classmates.

Bella the cat seems to have ended her recent spree of peeing on the furniture which started before we left for vacation, but really seemed to crank into high gear while we were away. After boarding overnight at the vet in order to get a urine sample, he concluded she didn't have any sort of infection. Of course, this means the problem continues to be purely psychological, but it also means I don't have to shove medication in her mouth for a few weeks, never a fun thing.....

The peaches have arrived at our local farmer's market!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince comes out on Saturday, and since I am the children's librarian, I get first crack at a copy. AND I am off this weekend, so I should be able to read it over the weekend in between family things......

Three more weeks of summer reading programs and then I am done with programs until September. I can do this,  I can do this....................
