The Main Characters

The Man (of the House): The love of my life. Severely addicted to books (that take up WAYYYY too much space in our house) and raw garlic. We've been married 15 years, but involved for many more. Long story....

Our Kids:
SC:  Age 14. Book addicted like both her parents. Serious, but with a nice sense of humor. Well mannered in the eyes of the world, but at home,it can be another story--she's a teenager(!)

JR: Age 10  I think of her as a Disney Princess's evil twin. All the eccentricity of both sides of the family wrapped up in a sweet little body and an adorable smile. People find her a darling. I do too, but I also find her exhausting!

The Beasts: Our 2 cats, both adopted from animal rescue. "Bart" is a big, solid black, total teddy bear of a cat. Our brown tabby queeen "Bella" is  in love with The Man, though she seems to like me too!

Me: Children's librarian by day, tired keeper of all of the above by night. When I think of my life, I think of Nicole Hollander (Sylvia)'s immortal line about things that are easier than combining a family and a career. Like swimming the Amazon covered in peanut butter....

    Want The Latest Mishegosse?

    We're Back

    posted Sat, 09/02/06

And let me tell you something, Barbie Blondes of the Weather Channel. That was NOT "Tropical Depression Ernesto" when it passed over Chincoteague.

It was freaking TROPICAL STORM Ernesto!

As you tsatskelahs were chirping about how the "remnants" of the storms were moving into New Jersey, down on the Delmarva, we were having torrential rain and winds at 50MPH with gusts around 74.  Isn't that what REAL meteorologists call a tropical storm? Don't you know where the heck the Delmarva IS?

Here's a picture for next time. That little red line to the left of the longer red line? That's Chincoteague Island. Which is where were were yesterday during the storm. Which is where we were when the "remnants" of the storm did THIS to our house:

We're fine. The house was fine. The owners came over and dragged the branch at left off of the path. The part hanging over the house has to be removed by the power company--and they hadn't come by the time we left today.

It wasn't too bad. The power held--except for one or two momentary outages. The Internet was intermittent--but the signal was like that in the house--and I was glad to have it at all!

We had plenty of food to finish up--even leftover ice cream from the Island Creamery. The girls watched TV, and drew. SC read and wrote a lot. The Man and I did read, crossword puzzles--we had 2 books of NY Times puzzles with us--and caught up on some episodes of a great radio game show--Says You!

Our local NPR station stopped carrying it, but I have an Audible subscription instead and had downloaded a batch of shows before we left home. I'm so glad WETA dropped the show--not only can I listen to it when it's convenient for ME, I don't have to listen to them interrupt it during pledge drives........

It wasn't how we wanted to spend our vacation. But it wasn't too bad, all in all.

This morning we couldn't go to Assateague Island to see the ocean one more time--there were lots of trees down and the Park Service had to close the island until the trees were cleared and off the power lines. So we headed home, with numerous stops for the Man to go to book stores and flea markets, and a trip to a great produce stand that not only had sweet corn, green beans and peaches, but a dozen dressed frozen soft shell crabs for moi. (The Man won't eat them--he says they look too insectile)  And when I eat them this winter, I will be thinking about the island I love, and dreaming of another summer vacation next August where everything will (yeah right) go perfectly according to our plans.......

But we're home. Back to my nice comfy bed (the bed in that cottage is hard as a rock), my own well equipped kitchen, and lots of ways to amuse the girls on a rainy day.

And back, of course, to our kitty cats.

Are they glad to see us back?  Is it just for the food?

    Judge by this picture:

And though JR doesn't look it in this picture, she (and the rest of us) are happy to be home................
