That was the comment of Kerri Hanley, Deputy Sergeant at Arms for the U.S. House of Representative. According to the customs of Congress, the State of the Union address is a formal occasion. Guests who have dressed in t-shirts or other items with political images are usually asked to cover them.
So perhaps the Capitol Police went overboard for arresting Cindy Sheehan as a protester.
But I salute them for tossing out Congressman C.W. Young's wife as well for her "Support the Troops" shirt.
As far as I'm concerned, Mrs Young is durned lucky the cops didn't arrest her as well for this exchange:
“They said I was protesting,” Young told the St. Petersburg Times. “I said, ‘Read my shirt, it is not a protest.’ They said, ‘We consider that a protest.’ I said, ‘Then you are an idiot.”
No, Mrs Young, YOU are the idiot for not showing up at a formal occasion in suitable attire. Surely you had a nice, tasteful suit in a patriotic color you could have worn? And a rhinestone flag pin or a yellow ribbon to show just how gosh durned patriotic you are. I mean all the OTHER Congressmen's wives managed to do so. Even the Democrats.....
And YOU, Congressman are equally idiotic for waving your wife's t-shirt on the House floor, beating your breast and declaring about your wife:
"She has a real passion for our troops, and she shows it in many, many ways."
We'll just leave that line, right where it is, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
And good for Capitol Police Chief Gainer. He had to apologize to the Congressman and his poor insulted wife. But he also had the charges dropped against Cindy Sheehan and has attempted to contact her to apologize as well.
Congressman Young,I know that you, your fellow travellers and your fearless leader the Shrub live in a bubble cut off from the rest of this country. But it's time to come out and smell the outside air.
The rest of us live in a country where NO ONE is supposed to be above the law and EVERYONE is supposed to play by the rules.
Try reminding your wife about that the next time you take her out in public, won't you?
